Vitamin D is often referred to as the “sunshine vitamin” as it can be made naturally by the body if the skin is exposed to sunlight. Due to its fundamental role in calcium absorption it is essential for healthy bones and teeth. In addition, it plays an important role in immune function.
Strong bones are dependent on adequate dietary calcium and absorption is helped by vitamin D. With advancing years, it becomes more difficult for the body to makes its own vitamin D, coupled with the fact that older people tend to “cover up” more and may not get out as often. Likewise, people are encouraged to use high factor sunscreen to protect skin from damaging u.v. rays, but this can hinder vitamin D production.
