Fuelling Guide

Below are guidelines on how to use 2:1 Energy drink powder. The guidelines are based on 2:1 Energy Drink being the sole source of carbohydrate for the duration of the exercise. Allow for energy bars and gels if using in addition.

Exercise up to 1 hour in duration

Hypotonic drink 3% carbohydrate solution | mix 1/2 flat scoop with 500ml of cold water in a RNC Fuel sports bottle. Use 3/4 flat level scoops in a 750ml bottle.

The Science of 2:1

How does 2:1 Glucose : Fructose work? 

Until recently it was thought that the body could only digest 60g of carbohydrate per hour.  A breakthrough study uncovered the discovery that different carbohydrate sources where digested at different rate and that the way in which they passed through the digestive system was specific to each type of carbohydrate.

In short all carbohydrates are broken down eventually to 2 forms, Glucose & Fructose regardless of how they started life. Some foods breakdown only to glucose like potatoes and some only fructose like fruits. Some carbohydrates contain both like table sugar for example is 1:1.

When carbohydrates reach the barrier of the intestines and blood stream, they require a transporter to pass through.  It is these transporters that are specific to glucose and fructose.  Glucose and Fructose can't share the same transporter and it has been established that there are 2 Glucose transporters to every 1 Fructose transporter hence the term 2:1. This ratio of transporters becomes the limiting factor on how much carbohydrate can be digested for each type of carbohydrate.  Think of it like the 3 lanes of the motorway. Glucose can use two lanes and fructose only one lane and importantly they can’t share each overs lanes.

Going back to the original theory that only 60g of carbohydrate could be digested per hour; this was because only single source carbohydrates had been studied (glucose variants showing 60g and fructose showing 30g). Fruit based carbohydrates (fructose) where previously thought to be poor for use in sports drinks for this reason. All traditional sports drinks to this day generally really on glucose based carbohydrates.

So if you combine glucose and fructose in the specific ration of 2:1 all lanes on the motorway are running and the maximum rate of up to 90g of total carbohydrate per hour can be achieved. The implications of this are massive in endurance performance and it is no surprise that scientific studies have shown replicated results in improvements in performance across a range of sports.

What makes the 2:1 blend special in 2:1 Energy Drink?

The way in which the 2:1 ratio is achieved is very important when it comes to optimum digestive performance and comfort.  For example you can achieve a 2:1 ratio of glucose to fructose in a recipe for a fruit scone or other food combinations but this wouldn’t be the ideal source for fuelling endurance.
